Breach &
Scutcheon
Welcome to the Breach and Scutcheon web page.
Breach and Scutcheon is a new set of wargames rules for the ancient and medieval period. We aimed to write rules that are as simple and straightforward as possible while having all you need for a full-on ancient battle. We think we have achieved it.
Breach and Scutcheon allows you to fight big battles with armies from the beginning of recorded history to the late middles ages. Games typically take two to three hours and the rules allow for the full diversity of ancient and medieval warfare without being over long or over complicated.
All tactical units have the same fixed width, and as movement distances are by base width there is no need to rebase your armies. Movement is precise. Shooting and melee are quick and easy to calculate. Combat effectiveness is based on unit morale and this degrades as the battle proceeds. The command and control rules allow you to get on with the game but without knowing exactly how many units you can move in your turn. The game mechanisms are easy to pick up, quick to use, and easy to remember.
We have been using these rules for over five years and have been refining them throughout that time. They have been used for big battles, with six or more players on each side, and for the more usual two player games. They have been extensively play tested within the Guildford club and outside, and been used very successfully, twice, at the Society of Ancients Conference.
Above all, they are fun and give close, exciting games.
In the next weeks and months we will be adding content to this page. We will put up battle reports with army lists, and video clips showing some of the important aspects of game play. Who knows, we may even put up a whole battle video. We hope to go to publication later this year so watch this space for news of progress and to register to get email updates.
