At the Europa Gatwick Hotel

Review

“Square Bash was a first-class event in all respects.  The pre-event administration was slick, and the instructions - of all types - were clear and intelligible.  The feeling that one was in the hands of caring professionals (…with patience and a sense of humour!), was tangible, and carried on over the entire weekend of the event.
The venue worked extremely well, with a good level of accommodation, on-site catering and bars.
Speaking as someone who has for decades attended various gaming and wargaming shows - both in the UK and internationally - Square Bash has shot into my No1 favourite show slot.  Bravo!” –

Come and join us at SquareBASH!

For three full days of historical board-wargames and strategy boardgames.

We will be reserving four large conference rooms for this second SquareBASH! with the potential to accommodate up to 130 delegates.  Please register your interest and we will keep you informed and let you know when tickets go on sale.

Ticket price for 3-days gaming: £89.50 to include:-

  • Reduced delegate B&B room rate (single £55.00 / twin £65.00 / double £65.00). You will receive a delegate code as soon as you have purchased your ticket to be able to reserve a room. There are plenty of rooms available. There are also plenty of other hotels in the Gatwick area.

  • Complimentary mid-morning & mid-afternoon tea/coffee pastries/cakes/biscuits plus a sandwich and hot chips lunch, on each day, included with the price of your ticket.

  • Ample free parking.

  • Bar available in function room, plus on-site restaurant.  The Coaching Halt pub 5 mins walk away from hotel with a great bar and restaurant menu.

  • Full accessibility with lifts for wheelchair users.

  • Free Prize Draw, with games donated by sponsors.

  • Bring & Buy stand (bring along your own games to display and sell on!).

  • Any size table bookable for Mega-Games.

  • The convention is not aimed at figure wargaming, only board wargaming.

  • All day gaming until the early hours Fri/Sat/Sun. Last out turn off the lights! The hotel offers 24-hour security to keep your games safe.

  • You can bring as many games as you like to the convention, from any publisher, though broadly speaking they should be historical/wargame/strategy/sci-fi based. For example, Dune Imperium would be fine, Wingspan probably not. Though there will be no policing of what people are playing we just want it to be an opportunity for people to play these types of games.

  • There will be an organiser published, this will be in the form of an online spreadsheet that everyone can access, like a google doc. We plan to launch this two or three months before the convention, it will give all attendees chance to post up games they are bringing and wanting opponents to sign up for, it will include details like name of game, how many players needed, time and day of proposed game.

  • There will be a game finder system at the event, which will allow people who don’t have anything arranged to get into a game that still has spaces on the day.

“Thank you for a tremendous weekend. As I mentioned to Caroline, I'm not on Facebook  so can't leave a review there but wanted to say what a happy and convivial event SquareBash was. The good-natured feel was in large part due to the attention to detail you showed: small things, such as how the pre-event comms were managed, the approach to the raffle, the way in which food and coffee magically turned up just at that point when the brain was starting to burn and the concentration starting to flag.

The hotel proved to be an excellent venue, the upstairs lighting notwithstanding. Some of the reviews might make you think twice about staying, but the bedding and rooms were clean, the staff friendly, and the public spaces inviting. The evening meal, too, were a cut above the partner hotel in Coventry.

I think SquareBash has established itself on the wargaming calendar and I am looking forward to next year already.” – Joe Boyle

“For me, the event was superb.  Ninety people attended - not bad for a first time.  The hotel was surprisingly good for £50 a night B&B - clean, comfortable bed, decent shower, welcoming staff, easy parking, decent beer and good quality tasty food.  The evening carvery at £12.50 was great value.

For the gaming, Andy and Caroline Rourke have been the perfect hosts.  The organisation was phenomenal and the attention to detail very close.  Those that arrived on Thursday could have started playing after lunch and apparently will only be thrown out at midnight on Sunday.  Tea/coffee with pastries or biscuits were provided each morning and afternoon, with a sandwich lunch - it took me back to business conferences.  And all included in the £75 conference fee.  The raffle (drawn at 18.00 so not clashing with dinner) was generous: yours truly and Gerard each won around £250 worth of games, and Caroline also ran a Scrabble Challenge, of which yours truly was the joint winner, walking away with a bar of chocolate.  Peregrine was one of several designers/developers who had the chance to further playtest their forthcoming games, while another budding designer brought a dice tower the size of a beer crate and the weight as if it were full of bottles. The only downside was the barely adequate lighting in the upstairs gaming room, but Caroline said they're working on that for next year.  Nevertheless, everyone I spoke to could not speak highly enough of the experience” – Richard Levell

“Thanks for organising SquareBash, I had a great weekend.  The hotel was fine, the gaming room was good (I did pick a well lit table early) and the sandwiches a nice touch, GF being appreciated.”  – Andrew Smith
